In 278 BC, the state of Chu was defeated by the state of Qin, Qu Yuan deeply grieved after learning the news, on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Miluo River to commit suicide, martyred the country.

The news of Qu Yuan's death spread throughout the state of Chu, and people came to the riverside to mourn in memory of this great poet and patriot. It is said that in order to prevent fish and shrimp from eating Qu Yuan's body, people wrapped glutinous rice and other food in bamboo leaves and threw them into the river in the hope that the food would feed the fish and shrimp and thus protect Qu Yuan's body.
