Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanyang Festival, is one of the four traditional Chinese festivals, usually held on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. The origins of the festival can be traced back to ancient sacrificial customs and activities to honor heroes. The name "Duanyang" comes from the ancient Chinese theory of Yin-yang and the five elements, in which the month of May is considered to be the period when Yang is at its peak, hence the name "Duanyang". In this festival, eating zongzi and dragon boat racing are the core traditional customs.

Zongzi is the iconic food of the Dragon Boat Festival, and its origin has a long history. According to legend, the invention of zongzi is related to the ancient poet Qu Yuan. Qu Yuan was a doctor of the state of Chu during the Warring States period who was exiled for his loyalty to the state and his opposition to corruption. During his exile, he wrote many poems that have been handed down to the world, expressing his deep concern for the country and its people. In 278 BC, the state of Chu was defeated by the state of Qin, Qu Yuan deeply grieved after learning the news, on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Miluo River to commit suicide, martyred the country.

The news of Qu Yuan's death spread throughout the state of Chu, and people came to the riverside to mourn in memory of this great poet and patriot. It is said that in order to prevent fish and shrimp from eating Qu Yuan's body, people wrapped glutinous rice and other food in bamboo leaves and threw them into the river in the hope that the food would feed the fish and shrimp and thus protect Qu Yuan's body. This is the earliest zongzi. With the passage of time, the method of making zongzi gradually spread and became an important traditional food for the Dragon Boat Festival.
